POMS College of Supply Chain Management

Mission Statement
The College of Supply Chain Management is a special interest group of POMS that seeks to create a community for researchers in supply chain management. The college embraces the full spectrum of research paradigms including modeling, empirical and field-based work and facilitates close interaction between academics and practitioners through focused conferences.

Past Events
The first CSCM conference was organized at Chicago Business School on May 3, 2005. The theme of the conference was Improving Supply Chain Synchronization and Strategy through Industry-Academia Collaboration, and it brought together 120 academics and practitioners.

During the conference, we ran a set of breakout discussions examining the supply chain challenges of Supplying To and Sourcing From an emerging market (the two themes of the conference). Each group discusses:

1. The critical supply chain needs identified by speakers, discussions during the conference, and questions posed in the wiki.
2. The existing gaps in the research and practice. What are the research opportunities?
3. What would a course on this subject look like? What are the most important subjects?

Moderators facilitated the group discussion and editors captured a short summary (bullet points, main conclusions, important questions), entered as comments in the wiki. Each group focused on a least two sub-areas of their theme. During the report back time, moderators and editors presented their wiki contributions. Everyone is invited to comment in the wiki on the topics, questions, speakers, and breakout summaries.

We are pleased to present the POMS College of Supply Chain Management (CSCM) second conference - held in Austin, TX on May 7-8, 2007 at the University of Texas. The CSCM Conference will immediately follow the annual POMS conference in Dallas.

The conference focused on "Globalization: Sourcing from and Supplying to Emerging Markets." It began on the afternoon of May 7 at Dell with a tour of the production facility, conference dinner, and keynote address from Dell executives. The conference will also feature the College of Supply Chain Management 2007 Best Student Paper Competition.

The conference was completely SOLD OUT with over 150 participants!

Conference Theme

In the POMS College of SCM conference, hosted by UT Austin and Dell, we discussed the supply chain strategies and tactics of working in emerging markets with an eye toward new research opportunities. The conference began on the afternoon of May 7 at Dell with a tour of the production facility, conference dinner, and keynote address from Dell executives. On May 8, the conference reconvened at the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin, hosted by the UT SCM Consortium.

Entry Strategy

Includes the decision process for entering emerging markets and key supply chain considerations such as channel development, partnering, and entry timing. Of course, this includes competition with both other multinational and local firms. A recent article in the Economist feature IBM's strategy in India accessing talent and developing markets. IBM is competing against "hungry tigers", Indian firms that are developing talent and moving into more lucrative markets once "owned" by IBM. Read the Economist Article and consider the implications for supply chain competition.

Student Paper Competition

The College of Supply Chain Management of the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) sponsors a Student Paper Competition. Each paper is judged based on its contribution towards advancement of theory and practice of supply chain management.

Background on Award

There are four conditions for eligibility: 1. Entrant must have been a student within a year of the spring conference. Only one entry can be submitted by an entrant. 2. The submitted paper must present original research conducted primarily by the entrant. Some assistance by other individuals (such as the student’s faculty advisor) is permitted as long as the student is at least the “first author” on the paper in principle. This should be reflected in the advisor’s letter. 3. The research must have been conducted while the entrant was a student. 4. The topic of the paper should fall within the scope of supply chain management, including: · Inventory management · Supply chain coordination · Integrated supply chain planning · Sourcing relationships and strategy · Supply chain design and facility location · Organization of the supply chain function · Managing product variety in supply chains · Coordination of product and supply chain design · The role of information technology in supply chain coordination · Logistics, order fulfillment and distribution · Supply chain risk management · Channel management. Four finalists are invited to present their paper in a special session at the POMS annual conference. Presentation quality is also taken into account to decide the first and second prizes. The first prize is accompanied by a $500 honorarium and the second prize is accompanied by a $250 honorarium. In addition, all finalists are awarded up to $500 of travel support and complementary conference registration for the POMS conference. All prizes are awarded at the POMS SC College Meeting.

Conference accommodations are available at the Austin Sheraton (see www.Sheraton.com/Austin) for $169/night. To make reservations please call (512) 478-1111 and ask for GROUP reservations and mention “POMS Supply Chain”. Reservations cannot be made on the national Sheraton phone line or website. The Austin Sheraton (formerly Austin Marriott At the Capital) is located at 701 E 11th St., Austin, TX 78701 (the corner of I35 and E 11th)St.

Transportation
Austin can be reached from Dallas by ground (Yahoo says 195 miles, 3 hours) or by a short flight (by either Southwest at Dallas's Love Field or American from DFW). The conference will conclude at 2:00 PM on May 8, allowing participants to catch late afternoon flights out of Austin.

Bus transportation
Bus transportation is available from Dallas to Austin on May 7 for ($ 50 per person). The bus will pick participants from Fairmont hotel starting 1:30 pm, and it will leave 2:00 pm sharp to arrive to Dell's facilities on time.
